PC Annoyances by Steve Bass (O'Reilly)
Does your computer ever irritate you?
Don't you wish there was a single source of
info about how to solve some of these
problems? Check out Steve Bass's new book,
"PC Annoyances: How to fix the most
annoying things about your personal
computer."
Steve Bass is the author of PC World's
Home office column and newsletter. He has
combined some of his best tips and
suggestions into this 176 page book.
This well laid out tome is very easy to
read and makes it simple to find the answer
to the problem that is bugging you right
now. .
The book covers a wide range of computer
topics from basics like how to control
windows, file-naming and font management,
the ins and outs of email, as well as proper
email etiquette, all the way up to complicated Internet tips
and fixes and how to manage specific
Microsoft programs like Word, Excel,
PowerPoint and Outlook, as well as how to
control the scourges of spam, worms and
other Internet vermin.
For example, I don't like Outlook
for email and prefer Eudora. This book is
one of the few that actually has GOOD tips
on how to use and improve Eudora.
As part of my job as a computer hardware
and software reviewer, I am always trying
out new stuff - adding and removing
hardware, trying our new software programs -
what this really means is that I am always
messing up my computer. This book is
wonderful for getting my computer back to
the rip-snorting power demon it was
originally meant to be.
These aren't your typical boring nerdy and tech
answers either. Steve gives us a little
attitude along with his suggestions. the For example, for those net
video files that people send to you but you
can't seem to get to play, Steve says,
"There are two fixes. The first is easy
- just forget it. The video was probably
boring or something you wouldn't want your
spouse to see anyway. But if you really want
to see, the videos,...here what you
do..."
(Steve gets the Internet Video Magazine newsletter)
There are lots of great tips and
techniques crammed into these easy to read
pages. There were even a few that I wasn't
aware of. Actually there were a lot of tips
that I once knew, and then promptly forgot.
Anyhow, if you are relatively new to
computing or computers truly drive you nuts,
check out this book. I found the biggest
advantage of this book is that I can give
this book to my relatives and friends so
that they'll keep from bugging me for
answers!
